Central Asia (California) Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash on Sunday, was buried in his hometown of Mashhad in the northeast of the country, according to media reports.

According to the city’s mayor, approximately 3 million people attended the funeral.

The president’s body rests in the Imam Reza Mausoleum, a 13th-century golden-domed complex revered by Shia Muslims as the resting place of Imam Ali Reza. It was around this cemetery that Iran’s second most populous city rose.

On Thursday morning, before Lacey’s coffin was taken to Mashhad, the president’s body was ceremoniously carried in a motorcade through the streets of Birjand, and thousands of people came out to say goodbye to the president.

The day before, Iran held a farewell ceremony for the deceased, attracting a large number of people to watch.

In addition to Raisi, seven other people, including Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdullahian, were killed in a helicopter crash in a mountainous area in the country’s northwest near the border with Azerbaijan.

A five-day period of mourning was declared across the country to commemorate the victims.
