The Ministry of Defense officially opened its twin data centers today. The ultra-modern IT facility in the central Netherlands ensures more efficient and secure management of digital data. This also improves the provision of information during operations. The new data centers are part of the Frontier IT (GrIT) initiative.

The new IT facility consists of 2 buildings equipped with servers and cooling equipment. If one of the data centers unexpectedly fails, the other one automatically takes over all tasks. This means that the information provided to the troops, etc. is always guaranteed.

In addition, the dual data centers are capable of processing large amounts of data, such as data from weapons system sensors, giving soldiers an advantage on the battlefield compared to the enemy.

Lieutenant General Budwijn Butz, deputy commander of the armed forces, stressed the operational importance of the new facility. “On the front lines, every second counts and data is fundamental. With more and better data, you can achieve your goals faster. This center can help with that.”

State Secretary Christophe van der Maat discussed how to improve the security of digital data. “The dramatic increase in cyber threats means we can no longer rest on our laurels,” he said. “Thanks to the GrIT initiative, we can store, process and share all our data securely here.”

Scalable

The new IT facility is scalable. It is easy to install additional servers and peripherals within the building. This is necessary because the Department of Defense manages increasing amounts of digital data.

“The dual data centers meet all the requirements to accommodate the increasing volumes of data now and in the future,” Boots said. “This opening is therefore a milestone in the modernization of our IT infrastructure.”
