The European Union recently announced that it would impose additional temporary anti-subsidy tariffs of up to 38.1% on Chinese imported electric vehicles. Bloomberg quoted people familiar with the matter as saying that the German government is trying to prevent the EU’s additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles from taking effect. If it is impossible to stop them completely, at least the relevant measures can be relaxed.

The report quoted a person familiar with the matter as saying that Berlin officials are optimistic that the EU will be able to find a solution through direct negotiations with China.

Europe’s largest economy said there is still room to reach a deal with China before tariffs take effect on July 4. A person familiar with the matter said German officials believe there is room for maneuver and believe they have allies within the European Union, emphasizing that not only China but also the European Union must take action to reach a deal.

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck will travel to China next week and plans to discuss the issue with Chinese government officials.
