If you ask someone to quickly draw a speaker, they’ll almost certainly draw a rectangular box with two circles on the front. Italian designer Franco Serblin has always seen things differently: convinced that speakers should also be beautiful, and that musical fidelity would flow naturally from that beauty, he founded Sonus faber in 1983, a company specializing in audio products. “He thought it was important to look at how violins and cellos were made,” says Ricardo Franassovici, CEO of UK publisher Absolute Sounds, one of Serblin’s biggest supporters. “He traveled to Cremona to talk to the old luthiers and uncovered the secrets of the industry.” The dedication of these artisans to their work can be seen in the brand’s classic products, especially the Sonus faber. After selling the company in 2006, Serblin continued to design until his death in 2013. “He was a bit like Michelangelo, he left behind many drawings,” explains Franassovici. Serblin’s son-in-law now runs his own studio, developing new products based on the ideas contained in the founder’s sketches.
The last one is named after Goldberg VariationsBach’s 1741 harpsichord piece. It’s an asymmetrical cabinet handcrafted from solid walnut, with thin strings in place of speaker grilles, reminiscent of Italian string instruments from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Vivaldi and Corelli pieces Franassovici chose to play for the demo were historically and musically appropriate, but – as expected from such a high-end product – the speaker plays everything from Muddy Waters to Seventies prog rock band Sweet Smoke to Dusty Springfield perfectly.
Goldberg Protocol It has no subwoofer or extended bass: According to Franassovici, listening to music in a living room is a bit of an overkill: “We want the sound to float in the room.” He does this in a simple yet profound way.
