Indonesia pushes for island water equity at global forum in Bali

PADANG, Bali (ANTARA) – Indonesia called for equal access to clean water on small islands at the 10th World Water Forum (WWF) in Bali.

Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuryono said most small island states face the same problems such as limited resources, urbanization, agriculture, remoteness, susceptibility to natural disasters and fragile natural environment.

“In small island developing states, these challenges are further exacerbated by a lack of financial and technical capacity, thereby disrupting the implementation of climate adaptation plans,” he noted in a statement issued by the Ministry of Communications and Information on Thursday.

He explained that in order to address various water-related issues, it was important to promote BroadCast Unitedlectual understanding of the impacts of climate change on small island states, small islands and nations.

“I hope this high-level panel meeting will provide a collaborative framework to encourage and implement integrated water resources management in small islands,” he said.

Deputy Foreign Minister Pahara Mansouri affirmed that Indonesia is committed to increasing the supply of clean water on all islands, including small ones.

He said collaboration between central and local governments was key to achieving clean water goals for small islands.

“Through the 10th World Water Forum, the Indonesian government and representatives from participating national delegations are committed to encouraging equal access to clean water for small islands,” Mansouri said.

Meanwhile, Bonaire Water and Energy Chief Financial Officer Joanne Ballentine said Bonaire is an island nation that cares about clean water.

The ongoing Global Water Forum is expected to provide concrete measures to support water sustainability in small islands.

“The 10th World Water Forum is a synergistic vehicle for exchanging experiences and insights on water,” said Ballentine.

She commented: “The Bonaire government itself ensured that the pipe installation was evenly distributed so that residents living there felt safe and could freely use and drink clean water.”

The theme of the 10th World Water Forum is “Water for Shared Prosperity” and will be held on May 25.
