Inguinal hernia is common in middle-aged and older men

An inguinal hernia is a condition in which the peritoneum (the membrane that covers the inside of the abdomen), the small intestine, and part of the large intestine protrude from the top of the thigh (called the groin area) and appear as a mass. This is also called a prolapse. Inguinal hernias occur in children and adults, but in adults, they are more likely to occur in middle-aged and older men whose fascia in the groin area weakens due to aging.

If left untreated, inguinal hernias rarely heal on their own and require surgery to fully heal.
