The Broek Dance and Theatre Festival will take place again in Vrijbroekpark in Mechelen over the next two weekends. For the fourth edition of the event, the Nona Art Center brings together established values and young talented creators. Some performances have even been created specifically for the festival.
This is already the fourth time that the Broek Festival has been held at Vrijbroekpark in Mechelen. “The past three editions have been very successful,” says Bart Vanvoorden, artistic director of the Nona Arts Centre, which organises the festival. “This means that we can take a new step in the development of Broek this time. For the first time, the festival will feature dance and theatre performances over two weekends in the park.”
Every weekend, from Friday to Sunday, there are five shows in the park. “So we built a big grandstand for the games. Crash Test Ibsen Trilogy From Het Zuidelijk Toneel,” it sounds. “They are currently playing at a major festival in the Netherlands, but will be doing a combination of three shows on the second weekend of the Bruck Festival. It’s like a carnival night, only with theatre instead of TV.”

In addition, several other big names from the theatre world will be present. For example, Abattoir Fermé and Voetvolk. The show is further complemented by young and talented producers who bring out the best in their productions. One of them is Ruben Madoulier. Especially for the festival he has put on a show in the Traffic Gardens in Vrijbroekpark. Visitors can experience the show on go-karts.

“Last week we actually had nothing,” Madoulie admitted. “But after a field trip with my colleague Micha Goldberg, we quickly put together a show. We turned the safety nature of Traffic Garden around and put on a show about famous people who died in traffic accidents, like Princess Diana. We connected it to American satire. The whole thing formed a fascinating and surprising show that I was very happy with.”

Tickets for the Mardulier show are still available. This also applies to most other performances. “Because of being able to organize two weekends, partly thanks to the support of Construction Europe, we have the opportunity to schedule more performances and thus reach a wider audience,” says Van Woerden. “That’s why we do this. We want to go beyond the walls of Nona and introduce dance and theatre to as many people as possible.”
Barbrook
Every weekend, there are also free performances in the summer bar Bar Broek, where you can eat and drink without a ticket. “That’s how Femke Gyselinck brings her solo dance Erato to Vrijbroekpark,” sounds. “This Saturday she will perform at 5pm and 7.30pm. She will be there again on Sunday at 5pm. The performance will take place in the centre of Bar Broek. This way everyone can enjoy it. We find this accessibility very important.”
The Broek Dance and Theatre Festival takes place at various locations in Vrijbroekpark, but the heart of the festival is the event space between the tennis courts and the hockey field.
