This afternoon, Adjutant General Maurice Van Drumere was honored with the White Carnation Award. He was honored for his years of support for the families of his fallen comrades in Afghanistan. He was also praised for his unbridled friendship with wounded veterans.

Van Dreumel was the successor platoon leader in Afghanistan. On April 18, 2008, parts of his platoon were hit by a roadside bomb. His fellow soldiers, Mark Schouwink and Dennis van Uhm, were killed. Toninho Norden and Roger Hack were seriously wounded.
Close contact with parents
Van der Rummel visited the parents of Scheuwenk and Van Umme immediately after returning from his mission. He has remained in close contact with them ever since. He visits both men every year for memorial services.
Van der Rummel is also closely associated with two veterans injured by roadside bombs. For example, he starred in a film about the life of Toninho Norden. The veteran ended up in a wheelchair as a result of an accident. It later turned out that Norden suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Van der Rummel therefore went with him on a military pilgrimage to Lourdes.
Eternal Friendship
The father of the late soldier Mark Schouwink nominated Van Dreumel for the White Carnation Award for his “enduring friendship.” His emotional speech impressed the judges. As a result, Van Dreumel was unanimously selected as the recipient of the White Carnation Award. He was selected from 20 nominees.
Veterans Award
The White Carnation Award shines a spotlight on those who have dedicated themselves to veterans in a special way. The National Veterans Day Committee began presenting the award in 2018.
This year’s award was designed by Her Royal Highness Princess Margarita. The design consists of three hands holding a white carnation.
