In a recent interview CNN Spanish Edition, Unity Platform candidate Edmundo González Urrutia said he was not worried about the possibility of persecution of Chavismo in the face of the next presidential election on July 28.
Asked if there could be a repeat of the 2018 election, when Maduro won amid allegations of vote rigging and an opposition boycott, González expressed hope for international pressure. “Fraud, vote rigging and threats are not new to us,” he declared. “But we are confident that the day when the opposition votes in such large numbers, our victory will be indisputable.”
If González arrives in Miraflores, his priorities will include controlling inflation and restoring confidence in the power structure currently dominated by Maduro sympathizers.
Likewise, González did not rule out the possibility of amnesty for outgoing officials. “In all political transitions and crises, there have been amnesties and transitional justice agreements. All countries that have gone through a situation like ours have agreed to it in the end, so I do not rule out that we could have something similar in Venezuela,” he commented.
Finally, González Urrutia was optimistic when it came to the possibility of electoral fraud. “We know we are facing an enemy,” he began, before correcting himself: “An adversary who does not hesitate to take advantage of any advantage the system gives him,” he noted.
