Judging from a 1 minute and 41 second video circulating on social media, many residents could be seen gathering at both ends of the painted bridge before it collapsed and fell into the river.

When the bridge, built in 2002, started creaking, residents took action. After a while, the bridge began to shake and the sound became louder. Residents chanted: “Be careful, the bridge is about to collapse, be careful, don’t let anyone cross.”

Not long after, the bridge collapsed and fell into the river. Some residents at both ends of the bridge fled when they saw the bridge collapsed.

It is understood that the collapsed bridge was the Panglima Sampul Bridge. The bridge connects Alay village to Gogu Darusalam village in Debintinggi district.

Meranti Islands Police Chief AKBP Kurnia Setyawan said the bridge collapsed at around 11am on Wednesday (May 22, 2024). Several members of the group were at the scene when the incident occurred.

“We got information from residents that the bridge was weakened. I ordered the Tebingtinggi Police Chief to go to the scene and protect people from crossing the bridge. While the members were guarding, the bridge suddenly collapsed and our members were also shocked because they did not expect it. The bridge will collapse,” Cunha said.

He ensured that there were no casualties due to this incident. The bridge was completed in 2002, Cunha said. It is unclear why the 180-meter-long bridge collapsed.

“We don’t know the cause of the bridge collapse. We are still waiting for an inspection from the Riau public works department,” Cunha said.

Teza Dasra, head of Bina Marga PU Riau, said that as a result of the incident, his team will find out what caused the bridge to collapse. “Teams have gone there to find out the cause of the bridge collapse,” he said.
