You must have had the same dream as me. But this dream was not a flower of sleep. But a dream about the future. A dream that is pursued and cared for in every way until one day it comes true.
But to what extent we can achieve our dreams is the question.
No one can deny the success of Negeri 5 Menara, written by Ahmad Fuadi, as a bestseller. The slew of awards the author has received also prove that this is no ordinary work of fiction. As a book, N5M is indeed a work that has inspired many people. In fact, the recent impact of N5M is reflected in the establishment of the Menara community, which also created a free school for underprivileged children.
After its success as a literary work, N5M can now be enjoyed as a feature film. I’m one of those people who gets a little anxious when literary works are adapted for the big screen. My vision of the beauty of a scene, the “profound” dialogue sometimes disappears once it becomes a piece of cinematic work.
There are many examples. Even Khaled Hosseini’s masterpiece, The Kite Runner, which is so beautiful in novel form, becomes dry and crisp when it is adapted into a movie. There are many nuances that are not revealed.
Last week (17/2), when I received an invitation to watch the premiere of the movie “Negeri 5 Menara” at Blitz Megaplex Pacific Place in Jakarta, that’s exactly what I did. If the movie strays too far from the novel, be prepared to be disappointed.
However, I know that novels and films are two different artistic mediums. It’s very unfair to compare the two. Fiction relies on the imagination of words. Films, meanwhile, are audiovisual works of art that sell primarily images. The movie will never be exactly like the story in the novel. Because something limits the author from visualizing his imagination into image language.
So, is the movie Negeri 5 Menara a failure?
I can say no. Despite the criticism, the film has a strong message about struggle. About the effort you put into achieving your goals.
The film is also imbued with the values of friendship, which are beginning to fade, at least in urban communities. The friendship between the tower friends, namely Alif and Basso, Atang, Raja, Durmajid and Saeed is so beautiful. The difference in cultural background does not hinder their friendship. Even this friendship lasted into adulthood.
The spirit of the story of Negeri 5 Menara is actually in the mantra Man Jadda Wa Jadda, which is an encouragement to the 6 protagonists of the film. This mantra means “whoever is serious will succeed” and is the driving force for the spirit of Sahibul Menara to achieve every stage of life.

Unfortunately, despite the rather good subject matter, the N5M movie suffers from a few notes. first, the movie’s plot is very slow at first, almost boring. The scenes in Alif’s hometown lack “emotion”. Initially I wished the director would have explored more the beauty of the West Sumatra landscape. But it turns out it wasn’t very detailed.
second, player selection. As a newcomer, Gaza Zubizarreta’s acting skills are actually quite good and her acting is very natural. Unfortunately, Gaza has an overly “urban” face. Although at first he was dressed like “Fuadi” and had long hair, his Indian-Pakistani face still could not erase the impression that he was a city boy.
As for the other actors, especially Atang and Basso, I think it was the right choice. Both players play naturally and show a “native attitude” that is pleasing to the eye.
There’s also something not quite right about the casting of Ikang Fawzi as Kyai Rais. Aikang’s acting skills fall into the good category. But please note Aikang’s very strong speaking style at the beginning. He tried to speak with a Javanese Medoc accent, but the result was confusing.
thirdThere is an impression in the film that jumps from the atmosphere of the Islamic boarding school at the end of the film to the scene in Trafalgar Square when the three protagonists meet. Why is there no common thread to tell Tasashipur the “success point” in practicing the Man Jadda Wa Jadda mantra? The process is difficult to describe. In my opinion, this is an important part because not all viewers are readers of N5M books.
But overall, this movie is still worth watching! The theme is unusual. In most horror-themed feature films, we need a cinematic theme like this. The public needs inspiring movies that inspire the spirit of never giving up. If the public complains a lot about a poor quality horror film, then it’s time for the public to prove their support for a good Indonesian film like “Negeri 5 Menara”.
