Iran recently rushed to install more uranium-enriching centrifuges at the Ford plant and began installing more equipment at an underground facility in the city of Natanz, Reuters reported today, citing a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
“On June 9-10, Iran informed the IAEA that eight new cascades, each containing 174 IR-6 centrifuges, would be installed over the next three to four weeks at Iran’s second underground uranium enrichment facility, Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant,” the new IAEA report said.
The report also states that the IAEA confirmed that Iran did complete the installation of IR-6 centrifuges on two cascades of Unit 1 of the uranium processing facility on June 11. This is one of the most modern centrifuges available to Iran.
Reuters reported on Wednesday that diplomats said Iran was expanding capacity at its two underground uranium enrichment facilities at Ford and Natanz in response to an International Atomic Energy Agency board resolution against Iran last week. But the escalation was not as serious as many had feared, according to Reuters.
Western countries have long suspected Iran intends to build nuclear weapons, but Tehran denies it, saying its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only. But at the same time, the International Atomic Energy Agency says it has not cooperated as much as it should and it is unclear whether it has disclosed all the information about its nuclear program.
