A contingent of the Peruvian National Police has today been permanently stationed in the Alphuayo Mishana National Reserve (Loreto) area, in the middle basin of the Nanay River, with the aim of ensuring the protection of indigenous communities. Park rangers from the National Natural Reserves Administration (Sernanp), an organization under the Ministry of Environment, are coordinating to intensify surveillance and control operations against illegal activities.
Therefore, a police base was set up at the Yallana Surveillance and Control Station, which, due to its strategic location on the banks of the Nanai River, close to the Yallana Lake and communities such as Mishana, El Porvenir, San Juan de Yuto, April 15, Anguilla, became the hub of operations to combat illegal logging and mining, which directly affects the conservation of this natural reserve and the ecosystem services it provides to local inhabitants.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Minister Juan Carlos Castro, who stressed that the government is working as a team to comply with the plan for economic growth and citizen safety. Regarding the monitoring station inaugurated today, he said it will help protect the Nanay Basin, which supplies water to Iquitos. “Now we will be more effective in combating illegal activities,” he added.
Regarding nature reserves and their biodiversity, he noted that these ecosystems “play an important role in the country’s development.”
Sernamp Police Chief José Carlos Nieto said the establishment of the police post strengthens the institutional commitment to protecting biodiversity and promoting improved quality of life in local communities, ensuring sustainable economic development.
In this sense, he insists that the fight against illegal activities that threaten the protection of protected areas must be carried out through coordinated cooperation with various sectors, such as the Peruvian National Police.

The Yarana Checkpoint and Monitoring Post is one of the main entry and exit and registration points for local, national and foreign tourists entering the protected area. Likewise, from this point, surveillance and control operations are planned and implemented to guarantee the safety of tourists and combat illegal activities.
From this position, multi-sectoral strategies and operations can be deployed to interfere with the traffic of river vessels that transport large quantities of fuel at night, as well as materials and supplies used for the illegal mining of gold in the area.
