- After seven weeks, the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway has reopened.
- The ropeway is closed due to extensive maintenance.
- On the first day of operation, at least 7,000 tickets were sold.
The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway reopened on Monday, with at least 7,000 tickets sold.
The ropeway has now reopened after seven weeks of extensive maintenance work.
The opening of the ropeway coincides with the start of the tourism month and the upgraded ropeway is expected to increase tourist arrivals in the province.
Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said: “More than one million visitors use the cable car every year and 7,000 tickets were sold today alone. Last year we broke the tourism record for the number of visitors to the Western Cape.”
The cableway is closed for annual maintenance, which includes replacing all four 1.5km, 120-tonne track ropes that support the Table Mountain Cableway.

Maintenance was also performed on the suspension and running gear.
In 1997, TMACC upgraded and introduced this Swiss-made cableway system, which features two revolving cable cars, each capable of carrying 65 passengers.
The work was carried out with the support of a team of nine Swiss engineers.
Table Mountain Aerial Cableway executive director Thelma Hercules said this year’s annual maintenance work was mainly to ensure that every visitor’s experience “is world-class”.
“We replaced the track ropes, completely overhauled the suspension and running gear, and adhered closely to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications. It’s all part of our ongoing commitment to safety, quality and excellence,” she said.
“Tourism Month is our opportunity to shine. We invite local and international visitors to rediscover the stunning beauty of Table Mountain and enjoy the best views of the city from our state-of-the-art cable car.”
