Greek authorities have so far kept the Acropolis archaeological site closed as the country is hit by the first heat wave of the season.

The hilltop castle, Greece’s most popular ancient site, will be closed from noon to 5 p.m. because of the hot weather, the Culture Ministry said.

All other archaeological sites in the Greek capital will also be closed at the same time.

Meteorologists predict that temperatures will exceed 40 degrees Celsius today in most parts of central and southern Greece, including Athens, the Cyclades and Crete.

Based on such forecasts, Minister Vassilis Kikilias, who is in charge of civil protection, said there was a risk of fire due to the combination of high temperatures and strong winds.

“The early onset of the heatwave, combined with a dry winter, has resulted in a very difficult fire season,” he said.

Athens authorities have provided air-conditioned spaces in high schools where final exams and college entrance exams are held.

Temperatures are expected to drop tomorrow and Saturday.
