Jaguar accident kills 8, including a Rwandan

According to information released by the Ugandan police, among the victims of the accident was a Rwandan named Akariza Aline, 28 years old, who lived in Rwamagana area, Fubwe district, Nyaga Sambu center.

The accident was caused by a Jaguar bus travelling from Kampala to Kigali, Rwanda, when it collided with a Fuso truck at high speed.

Other known victims of the accident include Moses Awinyi, Musa Munyanda, Steven Kayinamura, Edwin Tushabombe, Liz Akaliza, Teopista Amalia, Evelyn Natukunda and Acham.

Various agencies continue to carry out disaster relief work

According to Sam Musoke, an eyewitness to the accident, the bus overturned several times and fell into the ditch. “The bus had gone off the road several times and fell into the valley,” he said.

People along with Uganda Red Cross rescue workers and police rushed the injured to Masaka District Hospital for treatment.

Police spokesman Twaha Kasirye said the accident was caused by excessive speed and the two drivers’ inability to see clearly ahead because it was dark and there was frequent fog in the area where they were.

“We continue to warn motorists to avoid speeding. One of the factors that may have contributed to this accident was that the two drivers could not see clearly ahead because it was dark and there was a lot of fog in the area.

The official said they advised motorists to avoid speeding as it could endanger the lives of passengers.

Traffic congestion in Uganda has led to frequent fatalities. According to the police, 76 people died in traffic accidents and more than 360 were seriously injured between August 11 and 17.

The accident happened four days ago when a bus of Pokopoko Transport Company collided with a Toyota Hiace passenger taxi, killing 10 people.

On August 19, a Gateway bus collided with a Fuso truck on the Masaka-Mbarara road, killing six people and injuring 37. Eyewitnesses said the accident was caused by the bus driver trying to overtake passengers driving a Jaguar bus.
