The search for a 14-year-old French teenager who went missing while hiking on Mount Batukaru has begun for a week in Bali, Indonesia, the French Consulate in Jakarta learned on Sunday.
Thibaud was on holiday in Bali with his mother and two brothers, who live in the Paris area. During the day, the teenager climbed Mount Batukaru, one of the two highest peaks on the island.
His brother went to seek help
A family member in France contacted by AFP explained that the boy and his 16-year-old brother “both slipped and fell into the ravine” later that afternoon. The oldest child, who did not fall in the same place, went to alert emergency services the next morning, telling his brother, who was trapped on the ledge, not to move while they waited.
That night, when the mother did not see her two children arrive, she raised the alarm.
The family member said that after a day of walking, the brother finally notified emergency services, but they did not find the teenager when they arrived. He added that the missing young man did not appear to be injured in the fall and had verbally communicated with his brother during the night.
“No results yet”
“We asked the Indonesian authorities to continue the search beyond the seven-day custody period, and the search is still going on,” said Elsa Rochier, the French consul in Jakarta. “A lot of resources are being mobilised,” she added.
“The rescue operation is still going on,” confirmed Kadek Donny Indrawan, who is coordinating the Indonesian search team in Buleleng, north of Bali. “Around 30 people have been mobilized,” he added, noting that “no results have been obtained from the research so far.”
