Pyongyang, March 30 (Xinhua) — The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea strongly condemned the US plan to strengthen financial sanctions on Pyongyang.

On Thursday, the Korean Central News Agency quoted a North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman as saying that in February this year, hostile forces led by the United States “once again staged a farce of re-listing North Korea as a target of ‘countermeasures’ and obstructing North Korea’s financial transactions with other countries” at the plenary meeting of the international financial supervision agency held in Paris.

“They are pressuring SWIFT, the Belgium-based Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, to stop providing financial messaging services to North Korean banks,” the spokesman said.

The spokesperson also said that after amending and supplementing the “North Korea Sanctions and Policy Escalation Act of 2016”, the US House of Representatives proposed the “Bill to Escalate Sanctions on Transactions with North Korea.”

“It even concocted ridiculous excuses to impose independent sanctions on banks and companies in other countries that do business with North Korea.”

Although SWIFT has taken steps to ban communications with North Korean banks, “North Korea is establishing an anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing system in accordance with international standards and is doing its utmost,” the spokesman said.
