New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched the digital payments system e-RUPI, developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in collaboration with the Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and National Health Service.
“E-RUPI vouchers will play a role in promoting digital transactions and DBT in the country. This will help everyone in achieving targeted, transparent and leak-free delivery,” PM Modi said.
He stressed that India in the 21st century is moving towards the world of technology and e-RUPI also represents the same: “e-RUPI is an example of India moving forward with the help of advanced technology and connecting the people of the 21st century. I am happy that it is being launched as India celebrates 75 years of independence.”
He added: “This is a step towards future reforms.”
The Prime Minister said that not only the government, “if any general organization or institution wants to help someone for treatment, education or any other work, then they can give eRUPI instead of cash”.
He added that this would ensure that the money he donated went to the same work as the amount donated.
e-RUPI is a cashless, contactless, digital payment method. It is an electronic voucher based on a QR code or SMS string, sent to the user’s mobile phone, which can be redeemed at the service provider without the need for a card, digital payment app or internet banking access.
As mentioned earlier, the National Payments Corporation of India has developed a one-time payment mechanism on its UPI platform in collaboration with the Department of Financial Services, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the National Health Service.
The government said e-RUPI connects service sponsors with beneficiaries and service providers digitally without any physical interface.
This mechanism also ensures that the service provider is paid only after the transaction is completed. The system is prepaid in nature, thus ensuring timely payment to the service provider without the involvement of any intermediary
e-RUPI can be used to provide services under schemes like medicines and nutritional support under the Maternal and Child Welfare Scheme, Tuberculosis Eradication Programme, drugs and diagnostics under schemes like Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, fertilizer subsidy, etc.
The government hopes this will be a revolutionary move to ensure welfare services are delivered without gaps.
The Prime Minister’s Office said even the private sector can avail these digital vouchers as part of employee welfare and corporate social responsibility initiatives.
