The training was organized by GRA in partnership with West African students at American International University as part of the school’s 2024 Celebration Week.
This year’s theme is: “The Importance of Tax Compliance in The Gambia’s Economy”.
Representing the Director General, GRA Internal Audit Chief John Gomez said the GRA values every opportunity to engage with stakeholders, taxpayers and the public to discuss its responsibilities and the tax system as provided for in the Tax Code.
According to him, the main objective of the workshop is to enable students to understand and deepen their understanding of the obligations and rights of taxpayers and the procedures for paying taxes and customs in The Gambia.
He pointed out that the collaboration is also in line with the GRA Corporate Strategic Plan 2020-2024, especially Goal 2.
“This is aimed at optimizing customer service, improving customs relations and enhancing our corporate image,” he noted.
“The facilitation will also highlight key reform initiatives being implemented by the Authority to improve efficiency in tax collection.”
Mr Gomez said the partnership with AiUWA was an important milestone. “It provides a valuable opportunity for students to understand the importance of paying taxes and customs duties and how this contributes to the economic development of our dear country.”
He further said that the forum will also help in clearing misconceptions and misunderstandings about the role of the GRA.
He disclosed that the GRA is currently in the process of replacing the existing domestic tax system, GAMTAXNET, with a more robust system known as the Integrated Tax Administration System (ITAS). “This will facilitate online payment and tax filing, greatly reducing the burden on taxpayers,” he said.
Mr. Gomez thanked the GRA Board and Management, as well as the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs and development partners for their continued support for the GRA reform agenda and taxpayer education program.
The training was strongly supported by the Foni Kansala National Assembly Member, Mr. Almami Gibba, a resident of Kanilai village, and GRA officials headed by Matty Senghor.
