No matter how hard the Turkish president tries to back off his extreme rhetoric, he will not succeed because his mentality is simply not adapted to the so-called smooth coexistence of peoples and nations.

“We are fooling ourselves if we ignore the development of our region and the geography of our heartland,” he told cadets yesterday. “If we have an expatriate from the Adriatic to the steppes of Asia, his situation is our situation. From the Caucasus to Africa, there we have a brother and his dirt is our dirt.”

Notably, he was addressing those who would serve in the Turkish Armed Forces, and he was basically urging them to “poke their noses” anywhere in the world where Turks lived and had “defects.”

This approach can also be considered as figurative, that Erdogan and every Turk with common intelligence realizes that their capabilities are not as superpower as his country, the Turkish president, would like to believe.

The most dangerous thing he said was his reference to the “geography of the mind.”

For Turkey, the geographical location of the Turkish hinterland extends all the way to the borders of the former Ottoman Empire. This is like saying that for the Greeks, the geography in their minds is that wherever Alexander the Great set foot, wherever there are Greek colonies, should be inserted into Greece.

These views may sound funny, but they are official Turkish policy and form the conscience of generations who have followed Erdogan.

At the same time, we have the illusion that through confidence-building measures, hugs and love, we will find a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Unfortunately, as painful as it is, there is no solution as long as there is Erdogan’s logic, the geography of the heart and the blue homeland.

The long struggle, which was long but not a struggle, gave only time to strengthen Turkey’s courage.

Don’t let anyone ask me what advice I give, because it’s not my job to give advice. That’s the job of those who serve as leaders in the region, but unfortunately, they prove to be inferior to the environment they have to manage. Sometimes, not only inferior, but non-existent.
