The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) on Friday lamented the decay of the Federal Government’s multi-million naira Digital Bridge Institute in Enugu State and sought collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in the management and use of the facility.
The Communications Technology Centre located on Ugwogo-Nike Road in Enugu State was built more than a decade ago but was never operationalised.
Speaking at the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), the Chairman of the Enugu Chapter, Chigbo Obealor, said the construction of the facility in partnership with the NCC would help realise the vision of the centre.
He said: “The multi-million naira facility, located along Enugu-Nike-Ugwogo road, has been lying abandoned since its construction. We are hereby expressing our will to ensure that the facility is used for ICT youth training and manpower development in the state.”
Oberol also called on the Enugu State government to provide the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) in the state with an Advanced Engineering Workshop (AEW), saying it would help achieve the state government’s smart school initiative and provide a research platform for graduates of the smart school.
“This request is well-intentioned and will tangibly realise the state government’s vision of smart schools…”
“AEW is the foundation of research and development in any civilised country. It will also provide a research platform for future graduates of the Enugu State Government’s Smart Schools Project,” he added.
Oberol stressed the need to involve members of society in government activities so that they can provide professional advice to help the society.
Experts at the annual conference, themed “Implementation of Engineering Standards and Codes for Sustainable Development” urged governments to work with COREN and NSE to ensure the quality of engineering services.
They believe: “COREN, NSE and the government need to work together to control engineering standards.”
Meanwhile, the association also elected Engineer PIC Chukwunta as its elected chairman, replacing Obealor and others.
The association presented merit awards to members with outstanding performance and 13 people joined the association.
