Ukraine will stop pumping Russian oil and gas to the European Union via pipeline at the end of this year as the current contract expires by then and will not be renewed, a Ukrainian government adviser said on Friday.
Myhaylo Podoljak, an adviser to President Zelensky, told Novini.Live that the current contract is due to expire at the end of this year, and while it cannot be terminated unilaterally, “there is no doubt that it will expire on January 1, 2025.”
Kiev is ready to ship gas to Europe from Central Asian countries or Azerbaijan, but not from Russia, in order to deprive Moscow of a source of revenue.
The contract between Gazprom and Naftogaz for transporting Russian gas to Europe through Ukraine is due to expire on December 31.
Despite Russia’s invasion, which began in February 2022, Ukraine has fulfilled the terms of the treaty, in part at the insistence of its European neighbors, primarily Hungary.
But Ukraine’s leaders have made it clear there will be no extension. Zelenskiy himself recently said so again.
Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia are the last countries to receive Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline. The northern pipeline to Germany is mostly shut down due to Western sanctions on Russian oil.
The Kazakh subsidiary of Italian energy company Eni began transporting oil from the Caspian Sea through the pipeline in August, Russian media reported.
While the compromise allows Russia to generate transit revenue, it does not allow it to sell its own oil to Europe, its most lucrative market.
