In June, the Qingxingyunhe Water Brewery in Pyongyang received orders from its superiors to expand production, brew more beer, and invest heavily in exports.
According to Daily NK, a website that works with a network of sources inside North Korea, a meeting was held in August to ask employees to speed up the pace so as not to hinder overseas deliveries.
The goal of the exports is said to be twofold. First, to promote the country’s beer industry internationally to those who have visited North Korea and have already tasted North Korean beer, or who are generally curious about the country. The second purpose is apparently more important: to increase foreign hard currency in the national treasury.
On the beer app Untappd, one Western beer lover wrote that the Kyonghung Unhasu brewery already produces beers that are “maltier and grassier” than European beers.
North Korea wants to compete on price and taste. Who knows what potential it would have if North Korea released a Kim IPA for export?
There are about ten in North Korea There are large breweries. The largest is the brewery named after the Taedong River, whose beer is distributed throughout the country and occasionally exported to South Korea.
