That’s up 116 from 88,234 a week ago and 988 from 87,362 on Aug. 2, four weeks ago.
Analysis shows this is the highest weekend figure since weekly population data was first published in 2011.
It also surpassed the highest total ever, which was 88,336 at the end of February 2024 (a figure based on separate data on the size of the population at the end of that month).
The sharp rise in recent weeks may be due to the increase in the number of people sentenced to prison for crimes involved in recent unrest across the country.
