ABINGDON, Va. (AP) — A South Carolina man pleaded guilty Wednesday to federal charges in the 2021 shooting death of a police officer in southwestern Virginia.
The federal charges include drug trafficking and firearm causing death.
The plea agreement calls for the judge to sentence White to 40 to 100 years in prison. His previous plea agreement, reached on May 30, also called for a 40 to 100-year prison sentence.
White’s attorney did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment Wednesday evening.
In court documents, White admitted that he shot and killed Big Stone Gap Police Officer Michael Chandler, 29, on Nov. 13, 2021, as Chandler was responding to a call outside town limits.
Prosecutors said White tried to flee and got stuck in the grass, and when police arrived, White shot Chandler eight times from inside the car, which they said was filled with drugs.
Chandler died that night. White was later arrested at a motel in Kingsport, Tennessee.
