The US State Department announced the first set of sanctions in support of the Russian law. Press spokesman Matthew Miller made the announcement at a press conference in Sahdeep. The first batch of sanctions affects up to 30 people.
He said the sanctions would affect Georgian Dream members, lawmakers and police officers and their families.
As Miller said, sanctions apply to those who undermine democracy.
The first batch of visa restrictions included Georgian Dream members, members of parliament, law enforcement officers and ordinary citizens.
This includes individuals and their family members who are responsible or complicit in undermining Georgia’s democracy, such as violations of freedom of peaceful assembly and association, violent attacks on peaceful protesters, intimidation of civil society representatives, and the deliberate dissemination of false information.
We remain hopeful that Georgia’s leaders will reconsider their actions and take steps to advance the country’s long-term democratic and Euro-Atlantic aspirations. But if they do not, the United States is prepared to take additional action,” Miller said.
