Eric Spitz, High Commissioner of the Republic of French Polynesia, accompanied by Anna Nguyen, Head of the Administrative Region of the Windward and Leeward Islands, will visit Bora Bora on Friday, August 30 and Saturday, August 31, 2024. The municipal visit is organized by Mayor Gaston Tong Sang.
The tour will start at the City Hall with a meeting with elected officials who will present the projects implemented by the Municipality, followed by visits to Municipality developments and equipment supported and co-financed by the State: health, schools, energy or safety public and civil infrastructure such as pharmacies, school groups, thermal power stations, technical landfill centers, as well as animal pens.
In 2023, the Bora Bora Municipality benefits from State financial support totaling 1.5 billion XPF (all measures combined).
Public security will be the main theme of the work, which should culminate in the signing of an agreement to restore the partnership between the National Gendarmerie and the Municipal Police, which could, in particular, integrate the use of the dog brigade to enhance security.
The visit will continue on Saturday, August 31, with the presence of Antoine Petit, President and Director General of the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), and Pierre Sasal, Director of CRIOBE. The city will present its innovations in the environmental field, co-financed by the European Union and private sector partners: reverse osmosis units, wastewater treatment plants, ultrafiltration plants, decarbonization and renewable energy developments such as “SWEET” (Solar and Seawater Energy Transition Experiment), aimed at decarbonizing the electricity production, land and lagoon transport sectors, and “Bor’Acoustic”, a system designed to listen to the activities of marine ecosystems. These projects were also discussed at the IANOS seminar held on June 18 in Bora Bora.
The High Commissioner will thus be able to pay tribute to the dynamism of the city and its partners in the protection of the natural environment, its resources and the management of wastewater and waste. Its goal is the well-being of its people, promoting its avant-garde approach that can serve as a reference for the community and an international presence for French Polynesia.
The visit will also provide an opportunity for the High Commissioner’s “go to” mission related to monitoring the consequences of nuclear testing, by maintaining permanent documentation and contacting the population.
