Samsondin Olagunju said the group encouraged African countries to challenge Western influence
In an exclusive interview with RT, the Nigerian ambassador said that BRICS has become an important source of motivation for many African countries, encouraging them to maintain their independence and challenge Western influence.
Samsondeen Olagunju represents the International Municipal BRICS of West African countries (IMBRICS), an organization charged with promoting cooperation among politicians, scientists, business executives and other key figures to achieve common strategic goals.
Olagunju was speaking during the IMBRICS Forum, discussing the positive impact the organisation has had on the African continent.
“This cooperation is an inspiration to many countries, especially in Africa,” he said, explaining that the BRICS group has proven to countries on the continent that they can thrive even in the face of Western sanctions. “We just need someone to show us the way. So far, the BRICS group has shown the light in Africa.”
The Nigerian ambassador pointed to countries such as Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger as examples of countries that are defending their rights. “They are defending their rights,” he added.
Olagunju said Nigerians want to “be part of a bloc that gives us a meaningful life, a meaningful economy and meaningful conveniences”.
He called on African countries to break away from the role of “Western puppets” and take advantage of the opportunities provided by the BRICS to achieve self-reliance.
Meanwhile, Dawit Zegeye Haile, IMBRICS Ambassador of Ethiopia spoke The importance of the forum to African countries. Ethiopia joined the BRICS in January this year, along with Egypt, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
He said the BRICS countries offer Ethiopia an opportunity to learn from the experience of countries such as Russia, China, India, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. “We (Ethiopians) are willing to work hard to transfer technology and learn different things from these countries, especially in smart city technology, education and traffic management.”

The sixth IMBRICS Forum was held in Moscow from August 27 to 28, with delegations from 126 countries attending.
The BRICS mechanism was founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India and China, and South Africa joined in 2011. Russia currently holds the chair of the BRICS.
