This is the second time that Bhutan has hosted such an important regional conference since its inception.
The annual regional conference with the theme of “Encouraging Government Cooperation in Anti-Corruption” will be held with hundreds of people attending, including 34 anti-corruption experts and practitioners from the private sector.
Representatives will include civil society organizations, international organizations and the private sector.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is holding a major meeting to discuss corruption as they work to promote unity through corruption and competition.
Bhutan has scored 68 points for five consecutive years. The 2022 Transparency International Corruption Perception Report released on January 31, 2023 shows that Bhutan ranks 25th.
Bhutan ranks 6th among 124 countries in the Asia-Pacific region over the past decade.
Anti-corruption officials said the private sector will participate in the upcoming meeting and if it attends, it will be beneficial for the development of Bhutan’s trade.
In 2020, Bhutan ranked 89th out of 190 countries, and as it rises and falls in the rankings, so too do the challenges, and there is nothing wrong with a business culture with limited power and finances available.
The official said that as businesses internationalise, the private sector must play a bigger role in the economy, “Everyone needs to realise that the private sector in Bhutan is profit-oriented,” he said, adding that this would affect sustainability and development if it were to take priority over reducing business opportunities.
In other countries, if customers are unhappy with the results, “it’s a good idea to get a different experience, but one that’s immediately acceptable and prioritizes sustainability,” he said.
It is also important for Bhutanese businessmen to learn lessons from this situation.
Of the 70 speakers required for the conference, 35 have been confirmed so far.
