91% accuracy, not yet clinically available
When developing the chip, researchers found that when the subjects imagined writing each letter by hand in their minds, the brain activity contained very specific neural markers, called “unique neural codes” (DNCs).
The chip can currently decode 31 different characters, and the system is expected to be able to decipher up to 100 characters.
However, the chip has not yet entered the clinical stage. The team is testing the system in different environments, such as speech decoding and motion control. The goal is to develop a multifunctional brain-computer interface (BMI) to significantly improve the quality of life of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) and spinal cord injuries.
