Shahmy Shaheed, a young man from Beruwala who made headlines for walking 1,500 kilometres across Sri Lanka in just 45 days, was honoured by President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Presidential Residence in Colombo yesterday (August 28).
Shami’s extraordinary journey began in his hometown of Beruwala and took him through a series of major cities and picturesque locations on the island, including Ambalangoda, Rana, Mirissa, Hambantota, Velaya, Monaragala, Siambaranduwa, Potuvel, Nilaveli, Mullativu, Palantan, Pedro Point, Chunakum, Mannar, Medawakia, Anuradhapura, Puttalam, Marawila, Negombo and Colombo, before ending in Beruwala.
His walking tours aim to showcase the peace and security of Sri Lanka, encouraging locals and foreigners alike to explore the country without hesitation.
Throughout his journey, Shami used social media to share his experiences, effectively promoting lesser-known tourist attractions and drawing attention to Sri Lanka’s rich cultural and natural heritage. His efforts not only highlighted the country’s beauty, but also significantly boosted the country’s tourism industry.
During the meeting, President Wickremesinghe expressed appreciation for Shahmi’s dedication and the positive impact of his visit.
The President presented Shahmi with a special commemorative gift and expressed his hope that Shahmi would participate in future initiatives aimed at further enhancing Sri Lanka’s tourism industry. Shahmi’s achievements are an inspiring example of how the efforts of an individual can contribute to national pride and economic growth, especially in the tourism industry.
