A road known for its vehicular traffic will get a green and open space upgrade next year as construction of two new parks has begun on a section of Highway 139.
Route 139 runs east-west and is a feeder to the entrance of the Holland Tunnel. In recent years, the highway has undergone a number of pedestrian improvements to make it less intimidating for pedestrians. The highway connects The Heights to the growing Journal Square The community and two new parks hope to accommodate the growing number of new residents.
The first section of the new park will be located between Summit and St. Paul Ave. The future Summit Ave. Park will feature a central open area that will accommodate farmer’s markets, public art and cultural events, and other amenities including benches, planters, mulch, flowers and shade trees.
The park will have bike racks, construction has already begun and is expected to open sometime in 2025.
Summit Avenue Park will add new greenery to the east side of Jersey City’s sprawling Tram systemThe site, known as Trolley Park, is currently fenced off between Baldwin and Oakland avenues, except for a memorial to a pedestrian who died in the accident.
The future green space will feature a long, winding trail that will use existing exposed cobblestones and railroad tracks to celebrate Jersey City’s history. The park will also feature signage explaining the history of the Pavonia Avenue line and is expected to be completed sometime next year.
Both parks are part of an ongoing effort to add some greenery to the Journal Square area, which has been lacking true parks despite the area’s large existing population and the large number of high-rises currently under construction. Courthouse Park The project aims to change that, with plans to add more than three acres of open space along a major stretch of Newark Avenue.
