illustrationThe Prime Minister of Niger, Mr. Ali Mahmane Lamine Zaina, met with representatives of the Association of Private Radio and Television Promoters and independent media publishers on August 28, 2024. During this meeting, the President of the Association, Mr. Ali Idrissa, expressed the concerns of the private media about their working conditions since the events of July 26.
The discussion focused on several topics, including the financial difficulties of the media, the 2018 tax adjustment, and the detention of certain journalists. Mr. Idrissa also mentioned the precarious working conditions of media professionals, which are exacerbated by the lack of fair advertising. He asked the Prime Minister to take measures to improve these conditions, stressing that private media employ more than 1,000 people across the country, providing public services without compensation.
The prime minister promised to set up a committee to study these concerns and consider increasing support, particularly through a press aid fund and a review of the tax system applicable to private media.
