The incident occurred around 4 a.m. when Israeli troops surrounded a building in the Tulkarm refugee camp where Abu Shuja and several other Palestinian militants were stationed.
The Israeli military announced on Thursday that the commander of the Tulkarm camp, Mohammed Jaber (alias Abu Shuja), and four other camp members were killed in a firefight at the Nur Shams camp in the West Bank.
This is part of a larger military operation that began on Wednesday.
According to Israel’s Channel 14, the incident occurred around 4 a.m. when Israeli troops surrounded a building in the Tulkarm refugee camp where Abu Shuja and several other Palestinian militants were stationed.

In the ensuing exchange of fire, an Israeli force reportedly fired a missile at the building.
Abu Shuja and four others were killed after the clashes, while Israeli forces captured another wanted Palestinian from inside the building.
The Israeli military also said one soldier was wounded in clashes at the Nur Shams camp.
Nafir and the assassination attempt
Abu Shuja, the 26-year-old leader of the Tulkarm Brigades, has been a target of assassination by the Israeli army for years.
Last July, he was released from Thabet Thabet Hospital in Tulkarem, which was under siege, not by the Israeli military but by Palestinian Authority police, amid protests by ordinary Palestinians.
When news broke that Abu Shuja and others were trapped in the hospital by Palestinian security forces, Palestinian groups including the military wing of the Fatah movement announced NafirArabic for popular mobilization.
Last April, Israeli forces invaded the Tulkarm refugee camp in one of its deadliest operations in years, killing 14 Palestinians and injuring many more.

At the time, after rumors circulated that Abu Shuja had been killed, the young man appeared at a mass funeral of his colleagues, brandishing an automatic rifle and giving a rousing speech about continuing the resistance.
Israel has been trying to arrest or kill him ever since, especially since the Tulkarm Brigade became one of the most powerful fighting groups resisting the Israeli occupation of the West Bank.
Business Expansion
Witnesses noted that Israeli forces expanded their operations in Jenin and continued to besiege and raid homes in its eastern communities.
The army also attacked several neighborhoods in the city, sent in military reinforcements and engaged in ongoing armed clashes with Palestinian fighters, with explosions heard from time to time, Al Jazeera reported.
The Red Crescent reported that a Palestinian was killed by Israeli forces in the eastern Jenin area.
Israel’s military operations in Tulkarm have also intensified, with Israeli troops raiding the camp, searching Palestinian homes and detaining a large number of civilians for field investigations. Explosions and gunfire are often heard in various areas of Tulkarm.

According to Al Jazeera, Israeli troops withdrew from the Farah camp in Tubas, leaving behind severe damage.
The reporter also mentioned that the Israeli army attacked the Arub refugee camp north of Hebron (Al-Khalil) in the southern West Bank in the early hours of Thursday, the second attack in a few hours.
Government forces continue to besiege the Jenin and Nur Shams refugee camps in Tulkarm amid ongoing clashes and loud noises with resistance forces.
Israeli forces also carried out a series of raids in the city of Nablus, Balata camp and Askar camp, arresting several civilians.
Large-scale operations
For the second day in a row, the Israeli army carried out military operations in towns in the northern occupied West Bank, expanding its operations in Tulkarm and withdrawing from the Farah camp.
The Palestinian casualties have risen to 17 dead and more than 20 injured.
The Israeli Broadcasting Authority announced on Wednesday that the Israeli army has launched a large-scale operation in the northern West Bank, with security forces conducting operations in Jenin and Tulkarem at the same time.
Under the cover of air support, a large number of Israeli troops attacked Jenin, Tulkarm and its camps, and Farah camp near Tubas in the early morning. Israeli drones carried out at least three attacks, causing many casualties.
The Israeli military confirmed that combat helicopters and drones were involved in the operation to provide support to ground forces, which is expected to last for several days.
Israel’s Channel 14 called the operation the largest since Operation Defensive Shield in 2002.
Since October 7, the Israeli army has stepped up its attacks on the West Bank, including Jerusalem, amid the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, killing 670 Palestinians, including 150 children, injuring more than 5,400 people and arresting more than 10,000 people.
