BUKITTINGGI, West Sumatra (ANTARA) – Residents of Sitingkai, Agam Regency, West Sumatra, have a unique tradition of distributing sacrificial meat, called Manampuang.
“We have a tradition of distributing sacrificial meat and residents don’t need to have coupons and there are no restrictions on distribution,” local resident Heru Nofriandi said on Thursday.
In the tradition ManampuangMeaning “to hold something” in Indonesian, residents gather at the slaughterhouse to receive the sacrificial meat directly with their hands, or using provided plastic bags or leaves, Nofriandi explained.
What is unique about this tradition is that the sacrificial meat is distributed among individuals rather than among families.
“For example, a family of five is entitled to five portions of meat,” he elaborated.
He mentioned that the tradition of Stinkai has been passed down from generation to generation.
He added: “We don’t know when this method was first implemented but the elders of this village have been doing it all along.”
Thursday’s event began with the slaughter of the sacrificial animal. After the sacrificial animal was cut up, residents lined up in neat rows on both sides of the road, eagerly waiting for their share of the sacrifice.
“The line was hundreds of metres long with hundreds of residents patiently waiting to claim their share. It was an orderly and fascinating scene,” he commented.
Some event committee members transported the meat on carts and packed it into plastic bags.
“We keep this tradition because it is the fairest and most equal way to distribute the sacrificial flesh,” said Rizal, one of the committee members.
He added that the tradition has the potential to become an iconic element of religious tourism.
“In this area, we slaughtered five cows and the number of people slaughtered was in the hundreds,” he said.
