Police arrested a former member of the Millaniya local council of Janatha Vimukti Peramuna.
The police mentioned that the man had molested the woman several times before, and her father also mentioned in the complaint that he had threatened her not to report the case to the police.
The suspect had filed his nomination to contest for the post of team leader in the Millaniya Pradeshiya Sabha, an affiliate of the state BJP.
