(CNS): The Ministry of Education and the Department of Educational Services (DES) has revealed that students attending the Cayman Islands Further Education Centre (CIFEC) this year currently have nowhere to attend classes “due to unexpected delays in renovations at the former George Hicks site”. Officials said CIFEC will “temporarily hold classes at an alternative location” but despite classes starting next week, parents are still left in the dark about where their children will be attending.
According to some parents who contacted CNS, they were informed of the issue at a meeting yesterday evening, a few hours before registration started today, and it was too late for them to register at other educational institutions. One parent pointed out that the chances of getting their children into another school are almost zero at the moment, as all schools are full.
CIFEC director Mark Seerattan said the school is working closely with DES and administrators at Clifton Hunter and John Gray high schools to “finalize plans for reopening and will announce specific details soon.”
He added that various solutions were being explored, including sub-station arrangements and alternatives to “utilize existing resources and space without compromising the quality of education.”
DES Director Mark Ray said the department recognizes the inconvenience and uncertainty this situation may cause for some students, parents and staff. “However, we are committed to minimizing disruption while providing the best education possible for our students,” he said, adding that DES has been in constant communication with the project team.
Ray said in a news release that stakeholders will be regularly updated on the progress of the new facility to reassure worried parents. He added: “We share your concerns and are committed to addressing these issues quickly and effectively.”
Registration and enrollment for CIFEC students begins today and September 2, depending on the student’s last name, as shown below.
