Currently, the total length of the Latvian-Russian border has been built, about 130 kilometers, accounting for 46% of the total length of the border.Virtual Network Interface) Board member Yelena Gavrilova.

Vietnam has signed 16 contracts with six construction contractors for the construction of missing fences and infrastructure along the entire border. Currently, since April, construction contractors SIA “Citrus Solutions”, SIA “HAGBERG Construction”, SIA Nordes būve and the National Armed Forces are carrying out border fence construction works in the Aizgārša RSN section.

On the NSO side, the construction of the fence is being carried out by 80 soldiers and National Guard personnel, who are responsible for building the 20-kilometer section of the Grebneva and Ponturu Border Guard Division (RSN) assigned to them. Implementation is planned for the fall. In the coming weeks, VAS “Latvijas autoceļu uštūtējs”, PS “P and P Būvniečias grupa” and SIA Baltic Construction Company (BCC) will also start work.

“The construction of the missing fence on the Latvian-Russian border is one of the highest priorities of the Vietnamese state, so we are doing everything to achieve the fastest construction speed, and construction works are being carried out simultaneously in several stages,” Gavrilova said, stressing that on average a six-kilometer section is being built every week.

Gavrilova said that construction works and infrastructure development on a particularly difficult section of about 28 kilometers will continue until the end of 2025.

In total, Latvia’s border with Russia is 283.6 km long. Previously, SIA’s road construction company “Igate” built 99 km until the work stopped in 2019. In the summer of 2023, the company was entrusted by a special law to manage, implement and monitor the construction of road fences and infrastructure. Currently, Vietnam’s priority is to complete the construction of infrastructure and build fences in unbuilt areas.

Taking into account VNĪ’s previous experience, the swampy areas on the Latvian-Russian border will be protected using an innovative floating bridge solution with fencing, which is durable and has a service life of at least 50 years.

The implementation of the Eastern Border Construction Project is supervised by the External Border Infrastructure Construction Monitoring Committee, which consists of representatives of the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, the State Border Guard Service, the State Security Service, VAS “Latvijas Valsts radio and televsionis centrs”, VAS “State real estate”, JSC “Latvijas Valsts meži”, the Latvian-language Geospatial Information Agency and the State Armed Forces.
