The Mexican government suspended relations with the U.S. and Canadian embassies.
President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said the Mexican government had suspended relations with the U.S. and Canadian embassies in the country on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2024, after the two countries’ ambassadors criticized a judicial reform proposal he supports. “There is a suspension,” Lopez Obrador said at a news conference, clarifying that the freeze concerns the embassies, not the countries.
According to Reuters, the Mexican president wants to reform the election of judges, including those of the Supreme Court, through popular votes. In this sense, a committee of the lower house of the Mexican Congress approved the proposal last Monday night, paving the way for its adoption by the new Congress, which will take office in September.
Supporters of the reform say it will strengthen democracy and help fix a system they say is not serving the public, while critics say it will tilt power toward the executive branch, end judges’ careers and make courts more vulnerable to criminal influence.
Notably, U.S. Ambassador Ken Salazar last week described the reform as a major risk to the functioning of Mexican democracy and warned of potential risks to business relations between the United States and Mexico.
Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena supported Lopez Obrador in a message posted online late Tuesday, August 27 tenclaiming that decisions regarding Mexico are made by Mexicans. However, she reiterated that relations with friends and neighbors in North America are a priority and remain fluid and normal every day.
