The Union of Confident Trade Unions (UvAV) closely follows the developments in the health sector. It is clear that the healthcare system has reached a critical low point where not even human lives are spared. Policymakers must take immediate steps to find solutions to the problems within the sector.
UvAV has sent two letters to the President of the Republic of Suriname, asking for mediation in the dispute between the Minister of Health and the trade unions in the sector. In fighting for the credits that staff who provide care at all costs are entitled to, the Minister would have been better off trying to find a solution instead of opting for the green table. It should not even have come to the point where hardworking staff have to take these actions to enforce the credits they deserve.
They fully deserve better appreciation. This problem has an impact on society as a whole and we once again strongly call on the President and his administration to set priorities and find solutions.
UvAV declares solidarity with the actions of the unions in the healthcare sector. We will not turn a blind eye while our care continues to deteriorate. We also express our condolences to our brothers in the security services who have also been brought to justice.
On behalf of the UvAV Board of Directors
Jerrel McIntosh
Chair
