The Ethiopian government has strongly expressed concerns about the security situation in the Horn of Africa region and the transition period of the African Union’s interim ATMIS force in Somalia, which is being replaced by a new operation.
A press release from the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that they are concerned about the possible dangers of the current process, saying it could pose a threat to the security of the region.
Ethiopia’s Foreign Ministry said “various calls from Ethiopia and troop-contributing countries have not been heeded”.
The Ethiopian press release stated that “Ethiopia will not stand idly by while other parties are taking steps to create instability in the region,” adding that they are closely following the changes taking place in the region that affect their national interests.
This coincided with news that the Egyptian government was providing military aid to Somalia, the first time in more than four decades that the Egyptian government had provided such assistance to Somalia.
Somalia and Ethiopia are at odds over an agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland to lease Ethiopian waterways, and Egypt and Ethiopia are also at odds over the exploitation of Nile River water.
