Saudi Arabia’s Communications and Information Technology Council seems to have been merciless against Islamic websites recently.
Two Islamic blogs (benaa.com, lojainiat.com*) and an Islamic portal (islamlight.net) were blocked in March. Today, the Commission blocked a prominent Islamic Q&A website (islamqa.comThe site, which is overseen by scholar Muhammad Saleh Al-Munajid and contains his Fatawa, is a world-renowned Islamic website with content in about 10 languages. It could be blocked under a recent royal decree that prohibits unauthorized persons from issuing fatwas.
The blockade raised many questions on Saudi blogs about CITC’s use of double standards.
Some find it strange that there is still a lot of anti-Islam, anti-religious and sexual content online. Some comments questioned allowing Youtube.com and blocking such Islamic websites. The CITC blocks some video content on Youtube.com and uses a tagging system that makes much pornographic content available to the public, while other video-sharing sites have less moderation. Other comments stated that Sheikh Mohammed Saleh should have been given permission to issue the fatwa as he was a respected and knowledgeable man who was taught by and supported by Imam Ibn Baz Become an Imam and an orator.
It was recently reported that CITC had stopped the Sheikh-owned SMS service “Jawal Zad”, which sent Islamic messages to users via SMS.
When the Islamlight.net site was blocked, Shickh Muhammad Al-Habdan site administrators wondered how they dared block our conservative site, allowing sites like “elaph.com” and “alwatan.com.sa” to even think it was attacking Islam Dharma (Islamic law and way of life)
The Riyadh newspaper reported on September 1, 2010 that the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia stated that the decree would be announced after Eid al-Fitr (January 1 of the Islamic calendar), that is, September 10 and 11, 2010. This makes CITC’s decision seem hasty.
