Uruguayan club Nacional de Montevideo announced yesterday (Tuesday) that its player Juan Izquierdo had died at the age of 27, a few days after failing to maintain good health during a match in the Copa Libertadores tournament in Brazil.

The club announced, citing doctors who treated him at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil, that his cause of death was cardiac and respiratory arrest due to an irregular heartbeat. Izquierdo died at 9:38 pm on Tuesday (0038 am GMT on Wednesday).

The defender went down in the 84th minute of last Thursday’s round of 16 second leg against Sao Paulo.

In a post on the X social media platform, Nacional described Izquierdo’s death as a “terrible loss”.

Alejandro Domingos, president of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), offered his condolences to the clubs Izquierdo played for and to his family. “South American football is in mourning,” he said.

Izquierdo made his Uruguayan Super League debut with Atlético de Montevideo in 2018 and moved to Nacional in 2022, making 33 appearances for the team and scoring 2 goals.

Sao Paulo won the match 2-0 last Thursday to advance to the quarter-finals of the Copa Libertadores.
