Around half of young people aged 16-29 in the European Union say they have encountered hostile or derogatory messages online, according to a survey. The 2023 data focuses on young people in 23 EU countries who have used the internet in the past three months.
Topping the list is Estonia, where 69% of young people reported encountering hostile or derogatory messages online directed at an individual or group.
Denmark and Finland followed closely behind, with both countries reporting that 68% of young people had experienced similar online hostility.
The lowest rates were in Croatia and Romania, where about a quarter of respondents had encountered hostile messages, and in Bulgaria, the figure was just under a third.
Political views under attack
Eurostat’s findings show that political or social views are the most common targets of hostile or derogatory speech online.
More than a third of respondents in the EU said political and social views were a source of online hostility. In Finland, the figure was significantly higher, with 56% of young people citing political views as a source of hostile messages.
