So-called witches’ hair, tiny glass needles created during the eruption and then carried by the wind, fell yesterday over Reykjanesbjerg, including at the Vatnajökull swimming pool, where they caused problems and tourists even stabbed the soles of their feet.

Reykjanesbjerg’s director of sports facilities, Hafsteinn Ingibergsson, told a news agency that when staff arrived yesterday morning, there was witch’s hair all over the outdoor area and floating in the pool. Then it happened again in the second half.

“It covers everything – the water too, and clogs the filters.”

Hafstein said staff immediately began a comprehensive cleaning yesterday morning, clearing needles and removing filters.

Although the needles may be pierced, they soften when wet. However, some people got needles stuck on the soles of their feet when they walked through the second part.

“This is very surprising, as no witch hair was observed during the Reykjanes fires last season. If this continues, something needs to be done,” Hafstein said.

“We have to do this. There is a risk of an accident and if this happens again we may even have to close down.”

Minni Sigurdardottir, a natural disaster expert at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, told a news agency yesterday that the plume from the eruption was very high, which is why the witch’s hair grew so far.

Freitas Tofa also heard that children in Reykjanesbjerg were lying on trampolines and stabbing themselves with the witch’s hair.
