Today, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) celebrates its 56th anniversary under the Chairmanship of the Republic of Indonesia, with the slogan: “ASEAN Matters: A Focus for Growth”.
The association said in a statement that this year’s slogan is in line with the growth prospects not only of the regional bloc’s countries but also of its trusted external partners, such as the State of Qatar, which acceded to the treaty last year, in the spirit of friendship and cooperation.
The relationship between the State of Qatar and ASEAN countries has been developing steadily over the past few years, as reflected in Qatar’s various investments in the fields of energy, finance, real estate, communications, agriculture, hotels and pharmaceuticals, culminating in the establishment of the Qatar Investment Authority’s main Asia-Pacific office in Singapore. Some well-known Qatari companies such as Oreed, Nebras Energy and Qatar National Bank (QNB) Group also have operations in Indonesia.
Investment from ASEAN member states into Qatar has also grown steadily, with prominent projects in the oil and gas, hospitality, information technology, communications, construction and retail sectors.
ASEAN is considered to be an active and dynamic region with a population of 661 million, 60% of whom are under the age of 35. Currently, ASEAN’s GDP is about US$3 trillion, and this figure is expected to double in the next two decades, and it will occupy the fourth place among the largest economies in the world.
As part of Qatar’s National Vision 2030, several ASEAN member states play a vital role in supporting Qatar’s food security efforts.
It is worth noting that the five founding countries of ASEAN are: Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, and later other countries such as Brunei, Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia also joined.
