The new MPOX strain, dubbed Clade 1b, has been found outside the African continent, CNBC reported. The first and only Clade 1b strain in Thailand so far was found in a 66-year-old European who came from Africa, Mediafax reported.
As a result, Thailand has decided to strengthen surveillance and control measures at its airports. Travelers from countries with smallpox outbreaks must register on the Ministry of Health’s online platform before arriving in Thailand and undergo health checks upon arrival. Visitors showing symptoms of MPOX will be quarantined. Similar measures have been taken in Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore. Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral infection spread through close contact that can cause flu-like symptoms and pus-filled lesions. While the disease is usually mild, it can be fatal.
