French authorities detained Durov (39) on Saturday at Paris Le Bourget airport, where the businessman arrived from Azerbaijan on a private plane. Judicial authorities extended his detention several times, but the maximum he can be detained is 96 hours, AFP reported.

Up to 12 criminal offences are being investigated

According to people familiar with the matter, Durov is under investigation for 12 suspected criminal offenses related to insufficient restrictions on extremist content on Telegram.

Durov was born in Russia and lived there until 2014. In his own words, he left Russia because he refused the authorities’ demands to remove the opposition community on the VKontakte social network, which he founded and later sold. He also rejected the demands of Western security forces. He currently holds citizenship of France and the United Arab Emirates.

Telegram, a Dubai-based encrypted platform seen as an alternative to US social networks, which have been criticized for commercial exploitation of users’ personal data, claims it will never reveal information about its users.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday that Durov’s detention was part of an investigation and was not a political decision.
