Official report of the meeting between President Boossen and President Emmanuel Macron’s Special Envoy for the UN Conference on the Ocean, Olivier Povere Davoir, in Tonga.

With an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of 5.5 million square kilometres, French Polynesia plays a central role in France’s positioning as the world’s second maritime power. UNOC 2025 will be held in Nice from 9 to 13 June 2025 under the theme “ Accelerate action and mobilize all stakeholders to conserve and sustainably use the ocean”, the active participation of French Polynesia is essential. For President Brotherson, this deadline represents a major opportunity for global ocean management in the coming decades.

France intends not only to actively include French island territories, but also to involve Pacific countries in discussions and initiatives related to this global event. Recognizing the key role the region plays in global ocean governance, Olivier Poivre Darwall, together with Palau, the Office of the Pacific Commissioner, the United Nations Environment Programme, and the Global Policy Coherence Network, favours better coherence of policies related to oceans and adequate financing.

The event highlighted France’s desire to mobilize regional stakeholders to ensure that Pacific Island countries play an active role in international discussions on marine protection. President Brotherson reaffirmed French Polynesia’s commitment to actively participate in these discussions and highlighted several key areas: protecting marine ecosystems, developing marine renewable energy, promoting sustainable fisheries, and mitigating the impacts of climate change in the Pacific.

Finally, he called on the international community to impose a moratorium on deep seabed development to protect these particularly fragile ecosystems.
